US truck driver arrested after crossing border with drugs and firearm

An American truck driver has been arrested after he “accidentally crossed the border” with drugs and a stolen firearm, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said.

According to a statement released Friday, the driver followed his GPS directions and arrived at the border crossing in Lansdowne, Ontario.

Upon inspection of the truck, border officials reportedly found three grams of methamphetamine and a loaded 9mm handgun hidden in a stereo system.

The RCMP has confirmed the gun was stolen and a more in-depth investigation is underway.

The driver has been identified as 42-year-old Cedrick Cunningham. He faces at least 10 charges, including unauthorized possession of a firearm and possession of methamphetamine.

The next hearing will be held on September 6 at the Kingston Provincial Court House.

Investigators say Cunningham has an extensive criminal record, including a history of violent crimes, and is believed to have ties to street gangs in Georgia and Tennessee.

“The safety of Canadians is our top priority. By keeping prohibited firearms and narcotics out of Canada, we protect our communities,” Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc said in a statement. “This seizure highlights the incredible work of our law enforcement and border officials and the successful partnership between the Canada Border Services Agency and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.”
