The Vacancy

Islamic Relief Worldwide (IRW) is a faith-based humanitarian aid and development organization dedicated to saving and transforming the lives of some of the world’s most vulnerable people. Founded in 1984, with an active presence in over 45 countries, we strive to make the world a better and fairer place for those affected by poverty, conflict and natural disasters.

IRW is recruiting for the position of Director of Global Advocacy & External Relations to join its dynamic team based in its Birmingham, UK office. The organisation operates a hybrid working policy.

The purpose of the role is to lead the development and delivery of Islamic Relief’s global advocacy work and to support the advocacy and media work of its member and country offices, working with global media and leading global reputation management. As a member of the Board of Directors, the role will contribute to the leadership of the organisation.

The successful candidate must have the following:

  • Master’s degree in a field of social development, communications or equivalent.
  • Experience leading advocacy, media and external relations in international non-profit organizations, with a track record of developing and delivering impactful advocacy and media strategies
  • Experience in developing relationships and impactful partnerships with international actors, such as multilateral institutions and UN bodies, government donors, international Islamic organizations and global private sector actors.
  • In-depth knowledge of international media organisations and effective approaches to media engagement, combined with a proven track record of leading teams to achieve high-profile media coverage.
  • Experience in reputation management and crisis communications, including demonstrable experience in dealing with negative media coverage.
  • Extensive experience in providing training to senior staff.
  • Excellent written communication skills for a wide audience, including the ability to develop concise and coherent public messages to convey complex and technical information in an engaging manner.
  • An experienced media interviewer with valuable experience representing organizations in broadcast media interviews.
  • Strong management, performance management and people development skills
  • Experience in preparing and managing large budgets.
  • Understanding Islamic teachings and how they relate to key areas relevant to this role, such as charitable obligations, alleviation of poverty and suffering, climate justice, and empowerment/education for women and girls.
  • Fluent or strong working knowledge of a relevant second language, particularly Arabic or French
