The sanctuary city of Denver, Colorado, is considering converting an elementary school into a holding center for the city’s hordes of illegal immigrants.

A spokesman for Mayor Mike Johnston, a Democrat, confirmed to Fox News that a school has been “identified as a potential migrant holding center, but nothing has been finalized and there is no paperwork.”

Do Better Denver, a social media account, claims that Rocky Mountain Prep Sunnyside is the specific elementary school the city is interested in using as a migrant shelter.

The mayor’s spokesman also seemed to suggest that the problem of criminal aliens in the city is much less severe than others claim.

“It’s probably also worth stressing that there are very few new arrivals in reception centres at the moment,” a spokesperson said. “In the whole of August we saw around 150 people come through our reception system, many of whom stayed for just a few hours before moving on to other locations.”

All of this comes amid widespread reports of a violent Venezuelan prison gang, Tren de Aragua, taking over apartment buildings and operating openly and fearlessly in the nearby community of Aurora.

Video footage shows armed members of the Tren de Aragua gang moving freely through an apartment complex in the city:

Some critics, such as Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, have attributed the gang’s presence to the policies of the Biden-Harris administration and the administrations of Colorado Gov. Jared Polis and Aurora Mayor Mike Coffman. FYI, all four are Democrats.

“The situation in Aurora, Colorado, is just the tip of the iceberg of the problems that come with the Biden-Harris administration’s open border policy,” Luna told Fox News. “As gangs overrun our cities, Governor Polis and Mayor Coffman are complicit in the violence unfolding there, putting Americans in danger.”

“These criminals are reportedly involved in human trafficking and sexual abuse of minors. We must quickly put an end to the wave of illegal aliens flooding into our country and ensure justice is done to the victims of these monstrous acts,” she added.

Meanwhile, a group of Republicans in Congress this week wrote a letter to local leaders in and around Denver, also saying the community’s criminal alien crisis is the result of bad policy.

“The Biden-Harris administration’s open border policies, combined with the state of Colorado’s asylum policy and the city of Denver’s asylum city status, have fueled and exacerbated Colorado’s immigration crisis,” the letter reads.

Today, @chiproytx, @RepDLamborn, @RepGregLopez and I sent a letter demanding action and answers regarding the Tren de Aragua gang members and the illegal Venezuelan gangs terrorizing Aurora and Colorado.

The problem is that the biggest boss in Colorado, Governor Polis, is in complete denial, as is typical of Democrats.

“Police dismissed anger over the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua taking over apartment buildings in the Denver suburb of Aurora, calling it ‘imagined’ — despite video footage, police reports and the city’s mayor confirming it’s happening,” the New York Post reported.

Aurora City Councilwoman Danielle Jurinsky was stunned by his denial.

“I’m so disappointed,” she told Fox News. “My question to the governor is, is this also a figment of the imagination of the Romeros? And the other resident that I helped get out of there, and the other residents that I’m still going to get out of there?”

As previously reported, a few weeks ago Jurinsky helped at least one former resident of an Aurora apartment complex escape from her occupied apartment complex.

“There are people behind this who are just playing politics,” Jurinsky continued. “I find that so sad because these are real people, just like the Romeros who are suffering on the other side of those doors, living behind four deadbolts and a door bar and living in fear every day in these complexes.”
