Najib and Muhyiddin top netizens’ ‘list of nominees’ to have federal titles revoked under Agong’s latest proposal

Malaysia’s now-imprisoned sixth Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and former eighth Prime Minister (PM) Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin appear to be netizens’ first choice for the revocation of their royal titles. This is part of efforts by His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, the King of Malaysia, to preserve the dignity of federal titles and honours.

This comes after the 17and Yang di-Pertuan Agong (YDPA) warned that he has no problem taking such measures against recipients involved in criminal activities, who bring disrepute to the country or who have been convicted by the court.

“If a recipient insults the name of the country or commits a crime and is punished by the court, then all awards and medals of honour shall be revoked. Farewell,” Bernama quoted Sultan Ibrahim as saying yesterday (September 7) during the Investiture Ceremony at Istana Negara to present the 2024 federal awards, medals and decorations in conjunction with his official birthday.

“Therefore, I have instructed the government to check the list of prisoners in all prisons, and their honorary titles will be revoked. This only applies to federal titles and those who come from federal territories; titles from other states will not be affected.”

Compared to Perikatan Nasional chairman Muhyiddin, who has no court convictions but has a few pending cases, Najib fits Sultan Ibrahim’s definition of a “prisoner” as he is now serving a six-year sentence in Kajang Prison (halved from 12 years by the Pardons Board on February 2) for his role in a 1MDB (1Malaysia Development Bhd) scandal.

Nevertheless, Muhyiddin, who is also president of Bersatu, has received a fair number of ‘nominations’, presumably from supporters of the Madani government.

In a broader perspective, an internet user rightly states that state administrators should also follow Sultan Ibrahim’s strict decision. He would revoke titles/decorations from persons who have been found guilty of involvement in criminal or illegal activities.

“There are many who do not deserve the title because they have not contributed anything to society and the nation,” noted the Internet user who commented on Malaysian kini.

“It is common knowledge that many have paid for the titles they have been given. There are also people who have ties to gangsters or are leaders of gangs. Due to these accusations, the respect for these titles and title holders has drastically declined.”

As another commentator sarcastically noted, “if what the Agong said is true, 90% of all Datuks and Tan Sris will lose their titles.” – Sep 8, 2024
