Harris doubles down on support for left-wing benefits for illegal immigrants: ‘Smart solutions’

Vice President Kamala Harris is beefing up her support for an “earned pathway to citizenship” for illegal immigrants in a new campaign policy, while also laying out a bolder approach to border security overall.

“Vice President Harris and Governor Walz believe in bold, smart solutions to secure the border, keep communities safe, and reform our broken immigration system,” reads the lengthy “issues” page on her campaign website.

The page itself comes as Harris has come under pressure over her policy positions, including whether she will stick to some of her more radical policy positions from her 2020 presidential bid and how she differs from President Biden’s administration.

As a candidate, she supported decriminalizing illegal border crossings, called for closing immigration detention centers on day one and talked about starting Immigration and Customs Enforcement (IMD) “from scratch.”

After taking office in 2021, the Biden administration proposed a broad immigration reform bill that, at its core, provided a path to citizenship for millions of illegal immigrants already in the United States. Though it failed to advance after introduction in the Senate, the administration has repeatedly voiced its support.

More recently, and after a historic three-year crisis at the border, the administration’s focus has shifted to a bipartisan Senate bill that would not provide an amnesty option but would restrict certain entries into the U.S. and increase funding for the border.

On her campaign page, Harris emphasizes that as California’s attorney general, she “went after international drug gangs, human traffickers and cartels that smuggled guns, drugs and people across the U.S.-Mexico border.” She then notes her support for the border security bill.

“As vice president, she sponsored the bipartisan Border Security Bill, the strongest reform in decades. The legislation would have expanded detection technology to intercept fentanyl and other drugs and added 1,500 Border Patrol agents to protect our border,” she said.

She also praised the recent drop in border crossings after President Biden signed an executive order limiting the ability of new migrants to seek asylum at the border.

“As president, she will reintroduce and sign into law the bipartisan Border Security Act,” it says, going on to stress that she still wants people in the country illegally to have a path to citizenship.

“At the same time, she knows our immigration system is broken and needs comprehensive reform, including strong border security and an earned pathway to citizenship,” the report said.

It is Harris’ latest expression of support for amnesty for the many millions of illegal immigrants now in the US.

“We need Congress must act and to do what we know is necessary to fully invest resources in the border and create a meaningful pathway to citizenship,” she said in June.

She similarly called for an “earned path to citizenship” during her speech at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago last month.

Last month, Harris’ campaign confirmed to Fox News that Harris had changed her positions on a number of issues. A Harris campaign adviser told Fox that her positions “have been shaped by three years of effective governance as part of the Biden-Harris administration.”

The campaign manager said she believes unauthorized border crossings are illegal and wants to ensure adequate resources are provided to prioritize the detention and deportation of illegal immigrants. She also emphasized her support for more funding at the border through the bipartisan Senate bill.
