Following his arrest, Zarate was held in the Crawford County Jail. Authorities responded to a report of a disturbance in the 300 block of East Wells St., where they discovered a woman and a girl who had allegedly been assaulted by Zarate.

Zarate is facing multiple charges, including domestic mischief, battery, strangulation, physical abuse of a child and second-degree sexual assault. According to Prairie du Chien Police Chief Kyle Teynor, he suggested that Zarate was known to the victims, indicating that the attack was not random, according to WMTV in Madison, Wisconsin.

Since Zarate is not a U.S. citizen and may be in the country illegally, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) was notified of his arrest. The Tren de Aragua gang has been expanding its influence in the U.S., coinciding with the influx of illegal immigrants across the southern border with Mexico. The criminal organization is known for murder, extortion, kidnapping, and drug, weapons, and human trafficking.

NEW: DHS sources confirm that 26-year-old Alejandro Coronel Zarate entered the U.S. via El Paso on 9/25/2023. He was arrested in Minneapolis in November 2023 for receiving stolen property.

The gang is said to have taken control of entire apartment complexes in Aurora, Colorado, and is also active in New York City, where police are concerned about possible alliances with MS-13 gangs from El Salvador.

The arrest comes amid a string of crimes committed by illegal immigrants that have garnered national attention. In Alabama, an illegal immigrant was arrested after falsely identifying himself as a U.S. citizen and voting in multiple elections. In another case, Fairfax County police arrested an illegal immigrant from El Salvador, who had previously been deported, after they found children chained to a bed in their mother’s apartment.
