Hong Kong Customs yesterday (9 September) and today (10 September) discovered two cases of drug trafficking involving concealed baggage and seized approximately 10 kilograms of suspected methamphetamine, 10kg of suspected ketamine and 3.8kg of suspected MDMA, with a total estimated market value of approximately $10.3 million, at Hong Kong International Airport. Three men were arrested.

In the first case, a 28-year-old male passenger arrived in Hong Kong yesterday from Paris, France. During customs clearance, customs officers found the consignment of suspected ketamine and suspected MDMA hidden in his checked-in suitcase. He was subsequently arrested.

Following further investigation, customs officials conducted a controlled delivery operation the same day and arrested a 52-year-old man claiming to be a driver in Kennedy Town.

Following the investigation, the first arrested man has been charged with one count of trafficking in a dangerous drug. The case will be heard at the West Kowloon Magistrates’ Courts tomorrow (September 11). The second arrested man has been released on bail pending further investigation.

The second case involved a 20-year-old male passenger who arrived in Hong Kong today from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. During customs clearance, the suspected methamphetamine was found hidden in the food parcels in his checked-in suitcase and the man was subsequently arrested.

The investigation into the second case is still ongoing.

Given the increasing number of visitors to Hong Kong, Customs will continue to adopt a risk assessment approach and focus on selecting passengers from high-risk regions for clearance in order to combat transnational drug trafficking.

Under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, trafficking in dangerous drugs is a serious offence. The maximum penalty upon conviction is a $5 million fine and life imprisonment.

Citizens can report suspected drug trafficking through the Customs 24-hour hotline at 2545 6182, through the dedicated crime reporting email address ([email protected]) or through the online form (eform.cefs.gov.hk/form/ced002).
