A 12-year-old student was arrested Monday after allegedly making a threat at Legacy Knoll Middle School.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office said on Facebook reported that the student was removed from class and that school counselors were notified of the threat.

The student was removed from school and arrested after an investigation. The student was then taken to the juvenile court and held by the judge.

Legacy Knoll Middle School Principal Dr. Miriam Ledford-Lyle sent an email to parents notifying them of the incident and advising them to talk to their children.

“Our school system takes all threats, whether verbal or written, seriously. The safety of our students and staff is our highest priority. All threats are diligently investigated by school and district administration in coordination with our local law enforcement agencies. I urge all families to continue to communicate with their students about the importance of their words and actions. As our school system noted in last Friday’s communication, verbal or electronic threats or pranks are considered serious and will result in serious consequences. I sincerely appreciate your continued partnership in ensuring the safety of our students and maintaining a safe environment in which they can thrive,” the email read.

Sheriff Mangum also stressed that parents need to talk to their children about the importance of their words and actions.

“There are serious consequences for any student who makes these threats. We will continue to investigate all of these threats and do what we can,” Mangum said on Facebook.
