The arrest of four suspects linked to a construction mafia in Marshalltown has put an end to their alleged extortion and intimidation tactics at a construction site, thanks to the swift and decisive action of the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD).

On September 9, officers from JMPD CCTV Reaction responded to reports of extortion at a Total Garage construction site on the corner of Simmonds and Thorpe Street in Marshalltown.

The individuals, who allegedly blocked the entrance with a grey Mercedes Benz and demanded R1,000 a day from the construction workers, were quickly arrested and charged with extortion, intimidation and public violence.

The suspects reportedly demanded that their favored employees from Ward 124 be hired. However, the claim was disputed by the property owner, who denied that there was any agreement with the suspects regarding employment.

Superintendent Xolani Fihla has praised the JMPD’s swift response and said the City of Johannesburg is committed to eliminating the influence of criminal groups and ensuring a safe environment for businesses and construction projects in the city. “Our robust response today shows that we will not tolerate any form of extortion or intimidation.”

Fihla emphasized the JMPD’s commitment to working with other law enforcement agencies and stakeholders to stop these illegal activities. “We urge the public to report similar incidents to law enforcement and cooperate with officers as we strive to protect our community.”

The four individuals are being held at Johannesburg Central Police Station and a file has been opened for investigation. The grey Mercedes Benz vehicle that was apparently used in the crime has been seized and registered at the SAPS vehicle depot.
