Attorney General Announces Tougher Sweep on Ski Masks Amid Rising Crime Concerns – Antigua Tribune

Attorney general calls for stricter rules on ski masks amid growing crime concerns

Attorney General Steadroy “Cutie” Benjamin criticized the disturbing increase in the use of ski masks on the streets of Antigua, calling it a dangerous trend that must be eradicated to maintain public safety.

His comments came amid a broader discussion on the introduction of the Anti-Gang Bill 2024, which aims to tackle the rising gang-related activities across the country.

AG Benjamin expressed disbelief when he saw people walking through St. John’s wearing balaclavas, despite the tropical climate.

“Antigua is a country of sun and warmth, not a place for ski masks. It’s not like we have snow here, with people skiing everywhere!” Benjamin noted, clearly frustrated by the trend, which he sees as linked to criminal intent.

According to the attorney general, individuals often wear ski masks to hide their identities during criminal activities, such as robberies and gang-related incidents.

He said the government wants to tackle this behaviour as part of its broader crime-fighting measures.

“We cannot allow people to walk around with ski masks up to their eyes, covering their faces as they roam our streets. It is a matter of public safety, and we are going to deal with it,” Benjamin stated.

The attorney general also drew a connection between the use of ski masks and the broader problem of gangs and illegal activity.

He indicated that further regulations could be introduced to prevent the wearing of ski masks in public places, particularly in light of the upcoming warm season, which he noted is expected to be one of the warmest on record. “Between now and December, we’re going to have the warmest weather in history, and yet people are walking around with ski masks. What are they hiding? What are their intentions?” he asked.

AG Benjamin stressed that the government’s focus is on maintaining peace and security, and that citizens can go about their daily lives without fear. He expressed concern about the intimidating factor of individuals wearing masks in public spaces, such as St. John’s, where both residents and tourists are alarmed by masked figures in the city center.

With the anti-gang bill now being introduced, Benjamin indicated that measures to restrict the use of ski masks will likely be part of a broader legislative effort aimed at reducing crime.

He called on the public to cooperate and report any suspicious activity, and for citizens to be vigilant for people choosing to wear masks in inappropriate places.
