Alan Cumming Wins Emmys Hosting Award for The Traitors Season 2

Alan Cumming has won an Emmy for his efforts as host of the hit reality show The traitors —and he didn’t have to scheme, tell lies, or fib to win the prize.

Cumming won the Emmy for Outstanding Host For A Reality Or Reality Competition Program at the 2024 Creative Arts Emmy Awards, a well-deserved award for his campy and iconic performance as emcee in the second season of Peacock Original. From his castle in the Scottish Highlands, Cumming guided and encouraged the contestants of The traitorsa group of reality stars from series such as Survivor, Real housewives, And Big brother while playing an exciting variation on the party game Mafia.

The other nominees were RuPaul from RuPaul’s drag racing, Survivor‘s Jeff Probst, the Sharks on Shark tankand Kristen Kish, the new host of Top chef.

The award is a big deal for a few reasons. Cummings’ win breaks RuPaul’s eight-year winning streak in the category, as the Drag racing host has been dominant thus far. The Emmys tend to be consistent — perhaps to the point of being consistent — in handing out trophies to the same shows year after year, though even by Emmy standards, RuPaul’s streak is an exceptional feat. That Cummings stint on The traitors broke it is remarkable.

The victory also seems like a promising sign for The traitors‘ future Emmy hopefuls. The main Emmy telecast, airing this Sunday, will see the Peacock series compete for Outstanding Reality Competition Program. It will go up against The amazing race, RuPaul’s Drag Race, The VoiceAnd Top chefall of whom have previously won the category at least once. Cummings’ win in the hosting category is a promising sign of momentum for the show, which has been a huge success with critics and audiences.

The first season of The traitors won an Emmy for Outstanding Casting for a Reality Program at the Primetime Emmy Awards. The second season was nominated for four awards in total. In addition to the nominations for Cumming and for Outstanding Reality Competition Program, it was nominated for Outstanding Cinematography for a Reality Program and Outstanding Directing for Reality Program, although it did not win either award.

This was Cummings’ first Primetime Emmy win and fifth nomination. He was previously nominated for his role in The good woman and for hosting the 69th Tony Awards.
