According to Euronews and other foreign media, the authorities of the city of Agrigento have banned the sale of mafia-related souvenirs in the region. It seems to be an attempt to escape the negative image of the city ahead of the selection of the Italian Capital of Culture in 2025.

Sicily is home to the world’s largest criminal mafia, which is still active today. Influenced by this event, it was easy to see mafia-designed magnets, bottle openers and glasses in Agrigento’s souvenir shop. However, according to the city’s order, police will investigate local souvenir shops and fine them if they find mafia products.

“The sale of mafia-related memorabilia in the Agrigento area has contributed over the years to the spread of a culture of criminality,” said Mayor Francesco Michiche. “We are ordering a ban on the sale of anything that praises or mentions the mafia and organized crime in any way.”
