Diana hints at epic spy drama on Prime Video

I’m gonna keep beating this drum till I drop. Prime Video’s Big Budget Citadel The reportedly $300 million spy series may have flopped with critics and fans alike when it hit the streamer in 2023, but the glossy, futuristic franchise has continued with multiple international spinoffs, including the Italian-language Citadel: Diana which hits the streamer next month. And if you love spy drama as much as I do, this new series — starring Matilda de Angelis — is definitely worth a shot.

Prime has released the first trailer for the high-concept Citadel: DianaDebuting worldwide on October 10, de Angelis stars as Diana Cavalieri, an undercover agent for the Citadel spy agency, battling a powerful enemy syndicate in a near-future version of Milan. The story is set in 2030, years after Citadel was destroyed by the enemy syndicate Manticore. Prime Video sequel:

“Since then, Diana Cavalieri (Matilda De Angelis), an undercover Citadel agent, has been alone, trapped behind enemy lines as a mole in Manticore. When she finally sees a way out and the chance to disappear forever, the only way to do it is to rely on the most unexpected ally, Edo Zani (Lorenzo Cervasio), the heir to Manticore Italy and son of the head of the Italian organization, Ettore Zani (Maurizio Lombardi), who is vying for leadership against the other European families.”

Now, why am I so excited about this new series? There are actually several reasons. One of them is the fact that Citadel: Diana was produced by Cattleya, the Italian film and TV production company behind one of the best TV dramas of all time: the gritty mafia series Gomorrah. Just as important, perhaps even more so, is the presence of de Angelis, an incredible leading lady whose starring role here alone Citadel: Diana is worth seeing in itself.

Basically ignore what you might not have liked about the original Citadel series (which, no surprise, has a 51% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes). Considering that Citadel: Diana Set in Italy, there’s also a futuristic-meets-Old World vibe to this spinoff, which is to say that it adds the kind of visuals that I really think will make you feel like you’re watching a whole new series. That, combined with the incredible talent in front of and behind the camera on this one, gives me incredibly high hopes that when it’s all said and done, I might even add this to my list of must-see spy dramas from all the major streamers.
