Eskom in NW reports sharp increase in vandalism to infrastructure

Eskom in the North West reports a sharp increase in vandalism to infrastructure in the Mahikeng and Mmabatho areas, with the most recent incident targeting the Top Village substation.

According to Eskom spokesperson Ezekiel Baruti, the vandalism has had a serious impact on power supply in the region, raising concerns about possible large-scale power outages.

Baruti says that during a visit to the Seremane and Top Village areas, Eskom contractors were allegedly intimidated and extorted by individuals claiming to be part of the so-called ‘construction mafia’.

“Eskom strongly condemns these acts of vandalism, which have not only caused substantial financial losses but have also disrupted essential services in the affected areas. Communities should report all acts of vandalism and theft to Eskom and law enforcement agencies,” Baruti explained.
