A total of 34 countries have expressed a desire to join the BRICS in one way or another

SAINT PETERSBURG (Sputnik) – A total of 34 countries have indicated their intention to join the BRICS countries in one way or another, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday.

“Today, more than three dozen countries, to be precise, more than 34 states, have already expressed their desire to somehow join the activities of our association (BRICS),” Putin said at a meeting with senior representatives of the BRICS states on security issues.

According to Vladimir Putin, the plan for Russia’s BRICS chairmanship has already been implemented more than 70%.

“So far, the presidency plan has been implemented more than 70%. About 150 events, meetings and industrial forums have been held, and most meetings of experts and ministers have taken place,” Putin said during a meeting with senior representatives of the BRICS and BRICS Plus countries responsible for security issues.

Russia’s activities as chair of the BRICS 2024 conference were aimed at the rapid integration of new members of the association, Putin added.

“As the current chairman of BRICS, Russia this year has approached the organization of joint activities within the framework of the association with great responsibility. Our chairmanship is entrusted with a special mission: to do everything possible to facilitate the fastest and most organic integration of new member states into all BRICS mechanisms,” Putin explained.

According to Putin, the BRICS countries have gained extensive experience in tackling security challenges, including cybercrime and the fight against terrorism.

Why Turkey’s Move to Join BRICS as a Full Member is a Big Deal

“We are building on the truly solid experience of interaction that the BRICS have accumulated in responding to threats of terrorism and extremism, illegal arms and drug trafficking, transnational crime and illegal migration. Among the specific results of the joint work of the BRICS states, I would like to mention the creation of a special electronic register for exchanging data on computer attacks and incidents,” Putin said at a meeting with BRICS security representatives.

Russia pays much attention to security issues within the BRICS countries during its chairmanship, the leader added.
