UN tries to promote abortion in Honduras, which protects babies from abortions

Luis Martinez of Human Life International is lobbying the United Nations to help life-affirming countries resist external pressure to legalize abortion. When a United Nations committee met on September 11-12, 2024, they discussed nine different countries, including the Central American Republic of Honduras, which is under pressure from outside groups including the U.S.-based Human Rights Watch to abandon long-standing protections for unborn children.

As director of intergovernmental organizations and diplomatic missions for Human Life International, Martinez notes that of the six civil society proposals cited, five ask the UN committee to pressure Honduras to legalize abortion.

“Honduras, which has constitutional protections for the unborn, operates under a government that generally follows pro-life principles,” Martinez explains. “At the UN, Honduras has joined other countries in voting against resolutions or expressing reservations about resolutions that contain language supporting abortion. Honduras’ overall position is to emphasize maternal and child health, prioritizing family-centered approaches that value the lives of both women and their children.”

“However, international pressure from organizations like Human Rights Watch is forcing changes to the laws that support life in Honduras,” Martinez said.

Strikingly, of the groups filing agendas promoting abortion, only one actually comes from Honduras, where unborn children have been constitutionally protected from abortion since 1982. In addition to Human Rights Watch, which is headquartered in New York City, the organizations working to normalize abortion in the second-largest country in Central America come from Canada, Switzerland, Spain, Venezuela and Peru.

Martinez will continue to lobby the United Nations and challenge the practices of those who promote an abortion agenda, including…

  • Unscrupulous approach to victims of sexual violence: A revision of the protocol for the care of survivors of sexual violence, which is being manipulated to increase the performance of abortions on underage girls
  • Attack on national sovereignty: Deliberate refusal to honor and respect the cultures, traditions, and domestic laws of countries that place great value on marriage, family, and childbearing
  • Double protection for children: The scandalous omission of abortion by the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative on Violence Against Children in her mission to protect children from violence, abuse and exploitation around the world

Honduras is not alone

Abortion advocate Center for Reproductive Rights has lobbied the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women to call on Poland to scrap its abortion regulation. Ewa Kowalewska, executive director of Human Life International Poland, said: “The Polish nation does not want to kill its children! They talk about freedom, about harm to women, about health. This is completely deceptive language.”

Martinez pointed out that these attacks on pro-family laws in Honduras and Poland are not uncommon, but can be overcome. At the June 2024 General Assembly of the Organization of American States in Paraguay, Martinez’s coalition successfully neutralized linguistic manipulation to prevent censorship and prosecution of pro-life and pro-family organizations, blocked attempts to mandate “sexual and reproductive health” in resolutions or elevate abortion proponents to privileged status, and strengthened references to religious freedom to protect life and the family. Still, Martinez stressed, there is much work to be done for Human Life International at the global policy level.

In 1997, Human Life International founded C-Fam (Center for Family and Human Rights) to influence policy debate at the United Nations and other international institutions. Today, Martinez conducts advocacy and engagement on a parallel track, directly from Human Life International, through diplomatic missions that focus on:

  • Recognition of the rights of unborn children within broader discussions on children’s rights
  • Inclusion of prenatal development in discussions about child protection and violence
  • Coalition building and partnership with other pro-life and family-focused organizations to build a collective voice, amplify the message, and influence policy discussions
  • Educational campaigns that raise awareness about an organization’s position on abortion and its impact, supported by hard data and anecdotal testimonies
  • Support and disseminate research and documentation that align with a pro-life perspective, such as fetal development and the negative impact of abortion

Martinez’s mission at Human Life International focuses on participation in conferences of the United Nations and other international policy organizations – Organization of American States, UNICEF, UNESCO, Inter-American Development Bank, Inter-American Children’s Institute and Summit of the Americas. Human Life International is credited with shaping the global discourse around family and life issues.
