The Vacancy

Islamic Relief Worldwide (IRW) is a faith-based humanitarian aid and development organisation working to save and transform the lives of some of the world’s most vulnerable people. Founded in 1984, with an active presence in over 45 countries, we strive to make the world a better and fairer place for those affected by poverty, conflict and natural disasters. In the UK, IRW has a partner whose main role is to raise funds, raise awareness, deliver advocacy and support domestic programmes: this partner is called Islamic Relief UK (IRUK).

Islamic Relief UK (IRUK) is actively seeking to recruit a full-time, permanent ‘Communications Assistant’ position to join its dynamic Communications & Creative Content department. The role will be based in their Waterloo, London office. The organisation is currently operating a hybrid working model.

The role of the Communications & Creative Content department is to provide strategic and operational leadership for Islamic Relief UK in the areas of media, advocacy, internal communications and creative content. There is a focus on all internal and external communications and reputation management. The department also works with Islamic Relief departments to provide creative content and communications expertise and ensure that high quality information, materials and resources are delivered and maintained to support and promote our fundraising, marketing, advocacy and programme work.

The successful candidate must have the following:

  • Working as a communications coordinator or assistant, or providing support to a department head/senior manager
  • Attend and take minutes of management/departmental meetings and assist in preparing reports
  • Working with budgets and maintaining financial administration
  • Management of diaries and correspondence
  • Successfully providing administrative support to a busy department, including collecting, monitoring and distributing information to key stakeholders
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders as part of a team
  • Producing and/or delivering internal communication plans
  • Writing texts to share information, preferably with an internal audience
  • Excellent organizational, numerical and administrative skills
  • Strong written communication skills necessary to prepare letters, minutes, reports and other documentation
  • Strong verbal communication skills with excellent telephone manners
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the confidence to deal with people at all levels
  • Flexible and adaptable
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office suite, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Arithmetic and writing with a good level of education
  • Good understanding of the NGO sector
  • Ability to demonstrate confidentiality and handle sensitive material
  • Ability to produce accurate minutes of meetings and independently prepare/edit written documents and correspondence
  • Ability to plan, prioritize and deliver within tight timescales
  • Ability to work effectively on own initiative and as part of a diverse team, without close supervision
  • Ability to work methodically with excellent attention to detail
