Officers may seek to enlist GISBH top brass to investigate child abuse and religious exploitation

KUALA LUMPUR – Police may summon the top brass of a local company accused of exploiting children and religion, police inspector general Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said.

While this is a possible approach, there are currently no immediate requirements to do so as the investigation into the care homes linked to Global Ikhwan Business and Services Holdings (GISBH) is still in its early stages.

“We may call them up in the future, but for now there is no need,” he said at a press conference at the Kuala Lumpur police training centre today, Bernama reported.

On Wednesday, police launched Op Global, a major operation that led to the rescue of 402 children from 20 nursing homes linked to the company in Selangor and Negri Sembilan.

Razarudin denied the claims of slow police action and said thorough investigation was done before the raid was carried out.

“Every action will go through a process of investigation where information is collected from different angles.

“The police actions are still ongoing and we are currently acting on the basis of the evidence collected. The procedure we have followed is adequate,” he said.

The top police officer also denied allegations that authorities were protecting the company after photos of the company’s top management with senior police officers went viral. He revealed that he had also posed for photos with company representatives at a horse race in Terengganu.

“Taking pictures with them does not mean I condone them – misconduct is misconduct. If our investigation reveals evidence of criminal activity such as deviant teachings or sexual crimes, we will take appropriate action,” he said.

When police claimed that the rescued victims were not being allowed to pray, Razarudin clarified that permission for prayer was given on a rotating basis for security reasons.

Earlier, he said 13 of the rescued children are believed to have been victims of sodomy.

On Wednesday, police raided 20 nursing homes and freed 402 minors, including 201 boys and 201 girls aged 1 to 17.

According to the IGP, the properties searched were “healthcare institutions” with ties to GISBH, a multinational conglomerate involved in several businesses.

Investigations have shown that some of the rescued children were sodomized and taught to do the same to other children. The sick children were not given medical treatment, he said.

Razarudin added that the children’s bodies were touched inappropriately with the excuse that they were receiving “Islamic treatment”, while religious sentiments were used to gain sympathy so that the homes would receive donations.

Meanwhile, GISB Holdings denied operating the care homes that were raided by police, after also denying any involvement in exploitative child labor. – September 13, 2024
