Syrian man arrested for plot to kill German soldiers — RT World News

The suspect was carrying two knives and planned to attack the troops while they were having lunch, prosecutors said.

Police in the German state of Bavaria have arrested a Syrian migrant for allegedly plotting to murder multiple soldiers. The arrest comes as Germany tightens its border security in a crackdown on “Islamic terrorist groups.”

The 27-year-old was arrested on Thursday and accused of plotting a “serious act of violence endangering the state,” Prosecutors in Munich reported this in a statement to German media on Friday.
The suspect, who was described by prosecutors as a “alleged supporter of a radical Islamic ideology,” recently purchased two 40cm knives and planned to “attack on soldiers of the Bundeswehr” in the Bavarian town of Hof, where they were to meet at a military barracks during their lunch break, the statement said.

The Syrian man intended to “kill as many as possible” to “to attract attention and create a sense of uncertainty among the population,” the alleged statement.

The suspect came to Germany as an asylum seeker in 2014, Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann told reporters on Friday. Police received a tip on Wednesday from someone in his social circle who described him as an unstable drug user, Hermann added.

Germany is home to nearly a million Syrian asylum seekers, the majority of whom arrived after former Chancellor Angela Merkel opened the country’s borders in 2015 and announced there would be no limit on the number of asylum applications.

After a decade of bombings, stabbings, shootings and truck attacks, Germany is reversing Merkel’s policies. Interior Minister Nancy Faeser announced Monday that passport controls would be reintroduced at the country’s borders for the next six months in an effort to curb illegal immigration and threats from “Islamic terrorist groups” and transnational organized crime.

Faeser’s announcement came less than a month after a Syrian asylum seeker turned himself in to police after stabbing three people to death and wounding eight more in an attack on a “Diversity Festival” in the city of Solingen. The terrorist group Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) claimed responsibility for the attack.

Following the attacks, the anti-immigration parties Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) and Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW) made significant gains in state elections in Thuringia and Saxony. The AfD is currently leading in the polls in Brandenburg, where another state election is due to be held later this month.
