New Aurora Police Chief Visits Troubled Apartment Complexes

DENVER (KDVR) — The newest chief of the Aurora Police Department toured two apartments that have made news for their poor conditions and alleged ties to Venezuelan gang activity.

On Monday, Todd Chamberlain was sworn in as Aurora’s new police chief. Chamberlain is Aurora’s first permanent police chief since Vanessa Wilson was fired in 2022.

Just a few days later, Chamberlain toured Whispering Pines and The Edge at Lowry Apartments on Thursday. The complexes are managed by CBZ Management and both have struggled with lack of maintenance and concerns about the presence of the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua.

Aurora threatens to close apartments unless property management steps in

The city of Aurora recently threatened to close both complexes unless the owners take responsibility for the deteriorating conditions.

The Edge at Lowry apartment complex is known as a focal point for residents.

In late August, FOX31 obtained video of people allegedly breaking into The Edge at Lowry, leading to claims that the property has been overrun by Venezuelan gangs. However, residents of the complex said the narrative that gangs have taken over is false and that the bigger problem is the management and conditions of the property, with some calling it “deplorable.”

According to Aurora police, Chamberlain visited the apartments to “get a firsthand look at the living conditions and to talk to residents about life in the apartments.”

Aurora police said the department’s goal is to investigate criminal activity and track down those who victimize the immigrant community.

How to Help Migrants in Denver

Police are asking anyone who may be a victim of criminal activity to come forward, but reiterated that the department is not concerned with an individual’s immigration status. Aurora police said they do not enforce federal immigration laws and that their mission is to “make Aurora a safe and vibrant community for all residents.”

Anyone who has been a victim of a crime is asked to call 911 or Metro Denver Crime Stoppers. Tipsters can remain anonymous.
