Rescued children from GISB welfare institutions receive care and protection, says Nancy Shukri

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 14 — The Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development has confirmed that children rescued during the recent Ops Global operation are receiving proper protection and care.

Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri assured that the Social Welfare Department is monitoring the welfare of the children rescued from nursing homes in Selangor and Negri Sembilan.

“The rescued children are now in a safe place, which is under the supervision of the department and the police,” she said in a statement today, as reported by New Straits Times.

Nancy stressed that the ministry has been involved in the operation from the beginning and has ensured the safety of the children throughout the operation.

“Many have contacted me asking about the condition of the children during the recent police operation that has drawn public attention,” she said.

“Contrary to custom, I did not release any early statement or reaction regarding this case so that the authorities could carry out their duties smoothly. I also did not want any of my statements to disrupt the investigation or operation.”

She added that the ministry’s focus remains on providing proper protection and care to the rescued children, to ensure their comfort and safety.

The Santubong MP also said: “Thanks to the public, non-governmental organisations and everyone who expressed their concern about the welfare of these children.

“Your support is greatly appreciated and we will continue to fulfil our responsibilities in the best interests of the children,” she added.

The minister also said she would leave it to the police to provide the public with more information about the case.

It was reported that police rescued 402 children and teenagers aged 1 to 17 during the operation codenamed Ops Global.

It was suspected that the children were victims of exploitation, neglect and abuse, and some were even sexually abused.

Inspector General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain confirmed that 171 people, including 105 women, have been arrested in connection with the case.

Investigations are still ongoing under section 31(1) of the Children’s Act 2001, section 14 of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 and section 354 of the Criminal Code.
