Poilievre to meet with faction on Sunday ahead of parliament’s reopening this week

OTTAWA — Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre will meet with his caucus on Parliament Hill today as he prepares for a new attempt to topple the Liberal government as early as next week.

The one-day caucus meeting ahead of the reopening of parliament on Monday begins with a public speech from Poilievre, who has maintained his party’s lead in the polls all summer.

They are the last major parties to hold a fall strategy session, after the Liberals, NDP and Bloc Québécois all met last week.

All parties are adjusting their fall plans after NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh terminated the agreement that would have kept Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberal government in power.

Poilievre has promised to table a motion of no confidence at the earliest opportunity, which could happen as early as Monday.

The Tories would likely need the support of both the NDP and the Bloc to pass the motion, but that seems unlikely.

The Conservative agenda for the autumn will focus on the economy and a continued push to abolish the carbon price.

Conservative MP Michelle Rempel Garner also plans to introduce legislation to tackle online harassment and child sexual exploitation.
