Democratic congressional candidate Monica Tranel is shaking up Montana’s First Congressional District race with a notable shift in her stance on the fentanyl crisis. Tranel, who is challenging incumbent Republican Rep. Ryan Zinke, has changed her stance on the issue from her previous statements.

During her first congressional bid in 2022, Tranel downplayed the connection between the southern border and fentanyl trafficking, blaming the crisis on sources in China. In a recent campaign ad, however, Tranel appears to be taking a tougher stance on border security and combating drug cartels.

The shift in Tranel’s position comes amid alarming statistics released by the U.S. Department of Justice revealing the significant role of Mexican cartels in distributing fentanyl in American communities. The data indicated that a significant amount of lethal fentanyl doses had been seized, underscoring the severity of the crisis.

Responding to criticism from the Montana GOP about her shifting stance, Tranel stressed the need to secure the border, increase resources for Border Patrol and crack down on drug cartels involved in fentanyl trafficking. She voiced support for a border bill aimed at improving detection and prevention measures to stem the flow of illegal drugs.

Tranel stressed the importance of bipartisan efforts to address the fentanyl crisis, and criticized Rep. Zinke for perceived inaction on the issue. She reaffirmed her commitment to putting community safety above political agendas and criticized Zinke for allegedly putting special interests and China above border security.

As the congressional race intensifies, Tranel’s shifting position on the fentanyl crisis underscores the complex challenges policymakers face in addressing drug trafficking and border security. Her emphasis on bipartisan solutions and a proactive approach to combating illicit drug flows signals a shift in her campaign strategy toward a more robust stance on border issues.
