Concerns grow over nuclear cooperation between Russia and Iran

The United States and the United Kingdom are increasingly concerned that Russia is sharing sensitive information and technologies with Iran, which could increase Tehran’s ability to develop nuclear weapons.

According to Bloomberg, anonymous Western officials with knowledge of the matter have reported increased cooperation between the Kremlin and Iran in recent months, particularly over Iran’s nuclear ambitions. The issue was a topic of discussion in Washington this week when British Prime Minister Keir Starmer met US President Joe Biden at the White House.

A White House National Security Council spokesman said the Biden administration remains deeply concerned about Iran’s nuclear activities. President Biden has made clear that the United States is prepared to use all elements of national power to prevent Iran from escalating nuclear war.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken suggested during a recent visit to London that Russia might be exchanging nuclear technology with Tehran. Blinken reported that Moscow had received a shipment of Iranian Fath-360 ballistic missiles. “Russia is sharing technologies that Iran wants — it’s a two-way street — including in the nuclear field, as well as some space information,” Blinken said.

In discussions in London, Blinken and British Foreign Secretary David Lammy agreed that Iran’s nuclear program has never been more advanced than it is today. That was reflected in a joint U.S. State Department statement released Saturday, which stressed the potential threat posed by Iran’s nuclear advances.

Iran claims it does not seek to develop nuclear weapons. However, there are growing concerns that Tehran could pursue the creation of such weapons in response to escalating tensions with Israel.

Foreign ministers from the G7 countries condemned Iran’s export of ballistic missiles to Russia and Moscow’s purchase of these weapons in a joint statement on Saturday. The ministers described this as a further escalation of Iran’s military support for Russia’s war in Ukraine and demanded an immediate end to these activities.
