Hong Kong police warn of cybercrime targeting children as city records 900 cases of ‘naked chat’ and scams

Hong Kong police have warned that criminals are taking advantage of young residents in a wide range of cybercrime and deceptive activities, with more than 900 students falling victim to ‘naked chat blackmail’ and dating fraud last year.

The numbers were clearly visible on Monday when police launched the third edition of their youth crime prevention brochure, with 50,000 copies distributed to schools and youth centres.

Police Chief Raymond Siu Chak-yee said cybercrime is increasing globally as people increasingly go online for activities such as shopping, investing and dating.

“Cybercrime affects people of all ages. They are not only victims of these crimes, but are also used (by criminals) to support these activities,” he said.

“But (the police) have fewer opportunities to engage with young people compared to teachers, social workers and parents, so we need to work together to get our knowledge and messages across.”
