Karachi Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Emir Monem Zafar has criticized the Sindh government and the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation for failing to improve the city’s dilapidated infrastructure. He said both the provincial and local governments and their officials have become a burden on the city as they have proven to be incompetent.

Speaking at a press conference at Idara Noor-e-Haq, the headquarters of the Karachi JI, he said on Sunday that Karachi had become a city of problems under the rule of the

Pakistan People’s Party.

He highlighted, among other things, the poor infrastructure, road network and the electricity and water crisis.

He said that the Sindh Chief Minister is not solving the burning problems in Karachi but the road network in Karachi cannot be repaired due to the deteriorated sewerage system.

The JI leader also quoted the Sindh local government minister as saying that the infrastructure in Karachi cannot cope with the rainfall.

He noted that it seemed as if the mayor was also powerless when it came to the city’s affairs, as the CLICK authorities also neglected the mayor.

He said that the whole city was destroyed by the incompetence of the leaders.

Those who had won the city’s mandate were now responsible for solving the problems but they were either reluctant to do so or were unable to do so, Zafar added. He said the water crisis in Karachi was artificial and added that on one hand the Hub Dam was overflowing but on the other hand several areas in Karachi were deprived of water.

He said the tanker mafia was flourishing in the megacity at the expense of the water supply network.

The JI leader also commented on the issue of public transport system and said that the ruling regime had ridiculed the people of Karachi in the name of the Orange Line project.

To add to the misery, Karachi residents were left without utilities and faced high gas and electricity bills, Zafar said.

He lamented the utter failure of law enforcement agencies in the metropolis as over 400 innocent citizens had lost their lives to street crimes in the past eight months.

Against this background, he said that the JI was pursuing a nationwide campaign for members. He asked the citizens to be part of the JI so that the unjust and incompetent rulers could get a final blow.
