General description of the program:

GOAL has been active in Syria since 2013, responding to the acute needs of conflict-affected communities. GOAL works in Idleb Governorate, both through direct implementation and through partners, delivering food, non-food programmes to highly vulnerable populations and providing water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) through support to water units, as well as emergency assistance to recently displaced households.

GOAL has been active in the North Aleppo Governorate since 2019, both through direct implementation and through partners. We provide food and other programs to highly vulnerable populations, and emergency assistance to recently displaced households.

Purpose of the job:

The WASH Data Assistant will be based in GOAL’s Azaz office and will support WASH PM, WASH engineers and Wash data Officer with data collection, conducting periodic field inspections, documentation and reporting. He/she will work closely with the Syria-based GOAL engineers and the Water Units.

The main responsibility of the WASH Data Assistant is to ensure that all required data related to WASH activities are collected and documented correctly. This involves working closely with the WASH Engineers/Water Units. It also involves periodic visits to all pumping stations outside the WASH programme area to complete inspection checklists and documents. This requires a high level of knowledge of pumping station equipment and water systems.

Tasks, objectives and powers

  • Support WASH technicians by ensuring regular data entry and cleaning, performing analysis on data, and presenting findings from the data for internal and external online reporting.
  • Ensure that data collection tools are fit for purpose and make adjustments where necessary.
  • Ensure that accurate and up-to-date information is maintained for WASH activities and that data generated through field activities are updated daily in central databases and stored on the server.
  • Regular travel to all water pumping stations in the WASH programme area to collect operational data from the water stations.
  • Preparing and sorting WASH activities and project documents.
  • Provide assistance to the Wash Data Officer with data entry.
  • Managing the WASH MIS in collaboration with the field teams and the WASH Antakya officer,
  • Provide timely support and feedback to field teams on data issues and implement corrective actions to resolve issues with data collection, entry and cleaning in the WASH database.
  • Under the supervision of the WASH Manager in Azaz, work with the WASH team to ensure accurate beneficiary data is entered, stored and updated as required. This includes ensuring accurate disaggregation of beneficiary data, in line with GOAL and donor requirements.
  • Ensure regular and consistent updates of WASH beneficiaries and delivery of assistance through appropriate reporting software/platforms via SQL and Power BI.
  • Generate summary statistics and rapid and initial analyses and findings from WASH programme SQL databases, M&E datasets and/or other data sources to support data requests from WASH programme and grant teams.
  • Support the NA WASH team with administrative tasks such as maintaining timesheets for the water and hygiene units and entering information into GOAL monitoring databases.
  • Any other tasks that the Wash project manager needs to perform.

Requirements (essential)

  • At least a university degree.
  • Excellent knowledge of computer applications including Excel, Power Bi, KOBO and Commcare.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience with NGOs.
  • Knowledge of digital data collection platforms and Microsoft apps.
  • Basic knowledge of M&E principles, methodologies, data collection, analysis and interpretation.
  • Basic knowledge of grant reporting for humanitarian donors.
  • Experience in documenting, extracting and displaying data for various stations or camp sessions.
  • Good command of the English language.
  • Ability to coordinate multiple tasks and handle multiple demands efficiently
  • 1 year of experience dealing with staff at water stations, beneficiary communities or camps.
  • Strong documentation skills.

Requirements (desired)

  • Effective communication skills.
  • Experience as an NGO in a humanitarian setting, particularly WASH experience.
  • Good knowledge of water (particularly water networks), sanitation and/or waste management in the Syrian context.
  • Speak Arabic fluently.
