Goncharov (1973) director: Martin Scorsese

“The best mafia movie ever made.”

Plot Summary: Set during the Cold War in the 70s, KGB agents and CIA agents are fighting in the streets of Naples, Italy. They take over safe houses, fight for control of various secret documents and such. This disrupts the business of the Italian mafia in Naples. The chase scenes disrupt the business that the mafia has paid protection for, seniors in the mafia are caught in the crosshairs of these two powerful organizations. Then, one day when autumn turns to winter, all the local mafia organizations unite to drive the CIA and KGB agents out of Naples. The plan is to kill every agent of both organizations in the city. They know that if they miss even one, both organizations will pursue the mafia with a fiery vengeance. However, the mafia knows that if they kill every agent, both world powers will blame each other. Thus begins one of the best movies of all time with secret spy games, epic chases and undercover intrigues.

This one is still the canonical one for me. God, wasn’t Goncharov great? Neil didn’t like it, but that doesn’t matter anymore.

This is my favorite because all the other movies that came after it tried to do the “hey hey we’re all in it” part, where everyone acted like the movie was real and referred to a set of agreed upon plot points as if it were a real movie.

But this, this was real creativity. It’s an insane plot, and unrealistic, but it’s unrealistic for the real world. It is completely believable that this is the plot of a movie. It is amazing.
