Mollywood: Progressive Filmmakers’ Association to initiate reforms

association of progressive filmmakers

A new organisation called Progressive Filmmakers’ Association, headed by directors Aashiq Abu, Lijo Jose Pellissery, Anjali Menon and Rima Kallingal, will soon be formed in Malayalam cinema to ensure a safe working environment in the industry.

The decision to form the Progressive Filmmakers’ Association comes in the wake of widespread problems of sexual harassment, exploitation and gender discrimination in Mollywood, as exposed in the Justice Hema Committee report.

Filmmakers Anjali Menon, Lijo Jose Pellissery, Aashiq Abu and Rajeev Ravi, actor Rima Kallingal and film activist Binish Chandran issued a joint circular on Monday, September 16, outlining the association’s objectives and mission.

The joint circular stated that there was a need for the establishment of a new organisation which would focus on the modernisation and reform of the Malayalam film industry.

Inclusive, progressive environment

The circular stated that the main objective of the Progressive Filmmakers’ Association is to empower workers in the industry and to work towards the development of a new film culture.

The problems in Mollywood were pointed out and it was stated that there was a need to modernise the systems, legal frameworks and practices in the industry so that it could be at par with the competition.

The joint circular also stated that the new organization will attach importance to equality, cooperation and social justice, while safeguarding the rights of all workers, including producers and technicians.

It was further emphasized that the members of the Progressive Filmmakers’ Association remain committed to advancing the industry and creating a more inclusive, progressive environment that reflects modern standards of creativity and professionalism.

A parallel wing with a new perspective

There are already many other organizations present and the new organization is expected to function as a parallel wing, approaching the new challenges with a fresh perspective.

Aashiq Abu, who will lead this group, resigned from FEFKA due to the organization’s unsatisfactory response to the Hema Justice Commission report.

Following this, FEFKA Secretary General B Unnikrishnan came out against Aashiq Abu, claiming that his allegations were baseless. He also criticised the Justice Hema Committee report for including statements of people nominated by the Women in Cinema Collective (WCC).

Meanwhile, the executive body of AMMA was dissolved following the mass resignation led by Mohanlal after its top office bearers Siddique (General Secretary) and Baburaj (Joint General Secretary) were accused of sexual abuse.
