Johnny Depp’s 9-year-old controversial crime film is trending on Netflix and I can’t believe the Oscars ignored it

Johnny Depp’s gangster film Black Mass is now trending on Netflix and almost a decade later I still can’t believe Depp was passed over for the Oscar. Directed by Scott Cooper (Crazy Heart, Enemies, Deliver me from nowhere), Black Mass tells the true story of real crime boss James “Whitey” Bulgerone of the most notorious gangsters and kingpins in the history of the United States. Depp portrays Bulger, who was the brother of Massachusetts State Senator Billy Bulger and eventually became an FBI informant who helped weaken the power of the Italian Mafia in New England. Bulger became a notorious figure in the Irish Mafia of South Boston, Massachusetts, and died in federal prison in 2018.
