Interim government must not fail: Tarique Rahman

Tarique Rahman, acting chairman of the BNP, noted that even if not all activities of the interim government are satisfactory, they should not be allowed to fail.

He said this at a rally organised by the BNP on the occasion of ‘World Democracy Day’ in front of the BNP headquarters in Nayapaltan on Tuesday (September 17) afternoon.

Tarique Rahman said: “We must remember that the failure of this government is the failure of all of us. Therefore, the interim government must not fail in any way. But they must be careful not to cause their failure.”

He said: “Dictator Hasina has made the country completely vulnerable. Made the country dependent on imports and sub-dependent. That mafia gang has even bankrupted the country’s banks.”

Stating that the last 15 years have been occupied by mafia, the BNP acting chairman said that in the last 15 years more than Tk 17 lakh crores have been smuggled abroad. The mafia gang has not only destroyed the economy, they have also destroyed the justice system of the country. The extent to which a country is civilised is reflected in the behaviour of law enforcement agencies.

“Although the head of the mafia has fled the country, their gang is still active in the administration,” Tariq Rahman added that they are involved in a conspiracy. Therefore, the interim government must not fail. People must cooperate with them. However, the interim government must be held accountable. The interim government must implement various reforms.

The BNP acting chairman further said that mass uprisings were an exception. The first act of the people will be to increase the number of voters by two and a half crores. But none of them could vote. The BNP believes that the country cannot move forward by leaving behind half of the women and the young generation of the country.

Tarique also said that some time is needed for the journey to a discrimination-free Bangladesh. A change of power means a qualitative change in the state and politics. The government must work together until there is a people’s government.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir chaired the meeting. The meeting is coordinated by BNP Standing Committee Member Professor Dr. AZM Zahid Hossain and BNP Joint Secretary General Habibun Nabi Khan Sohel.

Sultan Salahuddin Tuku, BNP Publicity Secretary, Aminul Haque, Secretary of Dhaka Northern District Council, and Tanveer Ahmed Rabin, Secretary of Dhaka Southern District Council, jointly chaired the meeting.
