‘Why is the UK the final destination?’ Calls to open safe routes for asylum seekers spark fury in clash with GB News

A heated debate broke out on GB News today when presenter Ben Leo questioned why the UK has become “the final destination” for asylum seekers.

The new government has not yet made any proposals for new safe and legal routes for refugees. It is focusing on the creation of the UK Border Security Command, which will target people smugglers.

The weekend saw a tragic loss of life in the Channel, with eight people killed as more than 1,000 migrants attempted the perilous crossing. A Home Office spokesman said: “We all want to see an end to dangerous small boat crossings, which threaten lives and undermine our border security.”

The government’s renewed focus on tackling smuggling gangs comes amid a debate over the UK’s capacity to accept refugees. Speaking to GB News, Dr Chris Candia claimed the UK should aim for a more balanced approach.

He said: “We don’t have to provide safety to everyone who applies for asylum, but we can provide safety to some.”

He explained: “We need to have what I would describe as compassion and control. We can have strong borders, we can go after the criminal gangs. I think it’s appropriate that we provide sanctuary for people who need it.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS

“Normally it’s people who have family ties here. The safe and legal routes help to prevent boats crossing the Channel, where we see too many people dying. In Ukraine, for example, no one got on a small boat to get to the UK.

“They were able to apply for a visa in their country, escape the war, get on a plane and arrive safely in the UK.”

Charlie Downs, Head of Content at Migration Central, commented: “The UK government spends billions of pounds on its asylum system every year, a budget of around £4 billion.

“If times were better, if the economy was better, if ordinary people were doing better, then I would say maybe we should think about opening up more safe and legal routes.

“Every sensible and self-respecting first world country feels obliged to help those who are less fortunate than us.

“The fact is that the UK is not in a position to do that at the moment. We are in a very bad position, economically, socially, culturally, politically, and I don’t think we can really provide that. I don’t think we are a safe country.

“I think that’s what it comes down to. I don’t think we’re a safe country for refugees to settle in because we can’t even protect our own children from being stabbed by criminals who shouldn’t be here in the first place.”

Ben responded: “There are people who argue that we shouldn’t have taken in refugees from Ukraine in the first place.

Ben Leo wondered why the UK is the “final destination”

“The population of the UK is 70 million. We are a small island. If you compare it to say Australia, a population of 26 million, how big is it compared to the UK? About 32 times bigger.

“There’s just not enough space. Why is it the UK? Who’s supposed to act as the, you know, the final destination for the world’s needy when we’ve got so many problems of our own?”

The government’s new approach includes a £75 million budget for border protection officers and technology.

This funding, which comes from the scrapped Rwanda deportation plan, will strengthen the Ministry of the Interior’s Border Security Command.
