The state of New Mexico has sued social media giant Meta and its CEO Mark Zuckerberg for ‘intentionally’ exposing children to ‘sexual exploitation and harm to mental health.’

In a court filing Tuesday, the New Mexico Attorney General’s Office (NMAG) revealed that the conducted an undercover investigationwhere fake accounts of minors were created which were then used to fish for offensive content, according to a press release from the Daily caller.

“Meta and its CEO tell the public that Meta’s social media platforms are safe and good for children,” the lawsuit states. “The reality is very different. Meta knowingly exposes children to the dual dangers of sexual exploitation and mental health harm. Meta’s conduct has victimized New Mexico children on its platforms. Meta’s motive for doing so is profit.”

Meta is accused of turning Facebook and Instagram into “a marketplace for predators looking for children to prey on.”

“Our research into Meta’s social media platforms shows that they are not safe places for children but rather ideal locations for predators to trade child pornography and solicit minors for sex“, New Mexico’s Democratic Attorney General Raul Torrez said in the news release. “As a career prosecutor specializing in cybercrimes against children, I am committed to using every tool available to end these horrific practices and I will hold companies — and their executives — accountable when they put profits above the safety of children.”

In total, 33 state attorneys general filed a joint lawsuit against Meta regarding the alleged harmful effects of its platforms on children, according to an October court filing. Eight other states and Washington, D.C., filed separate lawsuits against Meta on the same day, The Washington Post reported.

“Mark Zuckerberg and Meta … misled the public and failed to make changes to Meta’s platforms that would protect children and teens,” Torrez told the Caller“In addition to seeking civil sanctions to stop Meta from endangering the safety of children, NMAG is asking the court to permanently halt Meta’s harmful practices and demand change.”

The trial takes place about a week after Meta’s death on Instagram pedophiles were allowed to search for content with explicit hashtags such as #pedophore and #preteensex, which were then used to link them to accounts offering child sex material for sale, with users posing as “little slut for you.” And according to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, Meta was responsible for over 85% of reports of child pornographythe Wall Street Journal reported.
