Rowdy killed in Chennai police incident

CHENNAI: History Sheet Kakkathope Balaji was killed in a police meeting near Vyasarpadi Jeeva Railway StationGangster Balaji, alias ‘Kakkathoppu’ Balaji, 40, was wanted in over 40 criminal cases, including extortion and murder.
A team led by police inspector Buhari was tracking the suspect. They found Balaji hiding at B&C quarters near Vyasarpadi Jeeva railway station in the early hours of Wednesday. Police said that when he tried to escape, he attacked the police team and injured one of the constables.
In retaliation, the police team opened fire and he was injured by bullets. He was rushed to Govt Stanley Hospital where the doctors declared him dead.
Balaji was involved in the murder of James and the murder of Kamaraj at Ennore. Later, Balaji had gone underground to avoid being targeted. According to the police, he ruled over parts of North Chennai after the rebel Nagendran was convicted by the court and Ennore Dhanasekar was sent to jail, while Sambavam Senthil remained underground for over two decades.
After Chennai Police Commissioner A Arun took charge in July 2024, saying he would contain the riots in the city. “We will speak in their language so that they (the rioters) understand.” Following this, Thiruvengadam, 33, one of the accused in the BSP Armstrong leader’s murder case reported on July 5, was killed in an encounter with the police.
He developed close contacts with the rebellious CD Mani and also maintained contacts with other rebellious persons in the districts.
Sambavam Senthil’s henchmen tried to kill Balaji and another gangster, CD Mani, when they were returning in their SUV near Kamarajar Arangam in Teynampet in March 2020. However, the duo had a narrow escape as the country-made bombs exploded just after their vehicle passed by.
Balaji was a resident of Kakkathope near Mannadi.
