Dozens of border agents investigated for smuggling, sexual abuse and bribery

Newsweek reveals that hundreds of U.S. border officials are being investigated for alleged misconduct, including human trafficking, bribery and sexual abuse.

Official figures seen by Newsweek show that 211 U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents are accused of a range of crimes, from drug trafficking to non-criminal misconduct.

The documents show that 17 cases of domestic violence, 11 cases of sexual abuse and 10 cases of smuggling of migrants across the border have been reported.

Eleven other officers are under investigation for physically assaulting a prisoner, while 13 officers are accused of having links to criminal gangs.

The real picture of alleged misconduct, however, could be much worse, as Newsweek has learned that CBP is also investigating allegations of crimes against children.

The cases not disaggregated in the data obtained under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) are categorized by CBP as “other criminal cases” because they do not match the general criminal categories included in the agency’s case management system.
