Youth worker accused of sexual exploitation in Hamilton

A youth worker from the Hamilton area has been arrested on suspicion of sexual exploitation.

Hamilton police recently launched an investigation into the alleged sexual assault of a juvenile following a complaint from the victim. Investigators say the victim was working with the suspect who was in a position of authority.

Police have not indicated the time frame in which the allegations occurred or the workplace where they are believed to have taken place.

Scott Shewfelt of Dunnville was arrested on September 11th. He is charged with sexual assault and sexual exploitation. He is scheduled to appear in court on October 10th.

The investigation has confirmed that Shewfelt worked as a youth worker. Police believe there may be more victims who have not come forward. They have encouraged anyone with allegations of their own to speak to investigators.

“Hamilton Police want all survivors of sexual violence to know that we believe them and will respect their choice of when and how they report an incident,” police said.

They “would like to encourage anyone who believes they have been a victim of sexual violence to come forward and report the incident to the police. There is no statute of limitations for sexual offences and offenders can be prosecuted long after the date of the offence.”

Hamilton Police have a Sexual Assault Unit non-emergency line at 905-540-5553 for survivors to come forward. Previous incidents can also be reported online.

Researchers “understand that while sexual assaults often cause long-term trauma, survivors may struggle to talk about their incidents with friends, family members, or law enforcement. If someone is not ready to report but is looking for support, contact Hamilton Police Victim Services at 905-546-4904.”
