Second judge denies bail for Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs, citing risk of witness tampering

Wednesday, U.S. District Judge Andrew Carter refused Sean “Diddy” Combs’ request for bail, citing concerns the music mogul could manipulate witnesses in his ongoing sex trafficking case. Combs, who was arrested earlier this week, faces three felony charges stemming from years of alleged sexual abuse and exploitation of women, federal prosecutors said.

Judge Carter ruled that “the government has proven that the defendant poses a danger” and found that the proposed bail package, which included a $50 million bond, regular drug testing, house arrest in Miami, no female visitors, 24-hour security and more, was insufficient to mitigate the risk of flight or witness interference.

Combs, 54, has pleaded not guilty to a criminal complaint that accuses him of organizing drug-fueled sex parties, known as “Freak Offs,” which he allegedly used to exploit both women and male sex workers. Prosecutors allege the events were elaborate productions that sometimes lasted for days, with Combs often recording the activities. The indictment also alleges that Combs used threats, violence and blackmail to prevent victims from speaking out, enlisting the help of coworkers to carry out coercive acts, including kidnapping and physical assault.

Combs has remained in federal custody since his arrest Monday night at a Manhattan hotel. Prosecutor Emily Johnson opposed bail, highlighting Combs’ history of intimidating prosecutors and witnesses. She pointed to messages from victims who alleged the rapper threatened to leak explicit videos of them performing sex acts if they refused to attend his events.

Combs will remain in custody for the time being while the case proceeds.
