Two inmates hospitalized after stabbing at High Desert State Prison

CLARK COUNTY (KTNV) — Two inmates are currently receiving medical treatment after a stabbing occurred at High Desert State Prison on Wednesday, according to the Nevada Department of Corrections (NDOC).

A source who works closely with the state prison system told Channel 13 that the stabbing was gang-related.

This source claims that they were members of the Surenos.

According to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Surenos, also known as Sur 13, are a criminal street gang that originated in Southern California.

According to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Surenos have hundreds of cliques throughout the United States. The Surenos and their associates honor the Mexican Mafia with the number “13,” which stands for the letter “M.”

According to the 2011 National Gang Threat Assessment from the U.S. Department of Justice’s National Gang Intelligence Center, the Surenos were expanding faster than any other national-level gang in the country at the time.

The source told Channel 13 that two Surenos managed to escape from their waist belts and then stabbed two suspected Surenos who had lunged.

This incident follows High Desert’s recent transformation from a medium-max facility to a maximum-security facility.

The source claims the inmates involved in the stabbing were part of the prisoner swap from Ely State Prison and were in strict custody.

Under state law, intensive custody is a restrictive level of supervision for offenders whose offenses or behavior demonstrate that they are at risk of violence, escape, or disruption of prison operations.

According to the state, intensive detention is the term for detention for the general population of a maximum security institution.

The source told Channel 13 they have not received an update on the conditions of the inmates hospitalized following the stabbing.

NDOC indicated that they will not be releasing any further information at this time.

This is a developing story. Channel 13 will provide updates as they become available.
