HBO’s highly anticipated series The Penguin premiered on Thursday night and fans are already raving about it.

Colin Farrell returns as the title character – also known as Oswald ‘Oz’ Cobb – reprising his role from the 2022 film The Batman.

This new series takes place just a week after the events of the film and shows how Oz plans to take advantage of Carmine Falcone’s death in the film.

Fans raved about the 70-minute episode on social media, with some even calling it one of the ‘best shows of the year’.

Some even compare the series to another iconic HBO series, which is considered by many to be one of the best series of all time.

The premiere sees Oz take a series of complicated and risky steps to fill the power vacuum in Gotham’s underworld.

In the opening scenes of the series, Oz is confronted by the heir to the Falcone crime family, Alberto Falcone (Michael Zegan).

Although he seems to be pleading with the unstable Alberto throughout the scene, he goes too far and quickly kills him. That is the crux of Oz’s storyline.

The series that many fans have compared it to was HBO’s iconic mafia series The Sopranos, as both series deal with organized crime.

“A great start to The Penguin. Very Sopranos-esque and funny too. Didn’t expect Dolly Parton to drop a needle,” said X user @ohhieverybody.
