SJS Enterprises demands apology for redeploying 174 workers

SJS Enterprises, which is accused of suspending 174 employees at its Bengaluru facility, has agreed to reinstate the workers if they individually apologise.

“We have to wear a band to keep track of our time and how long we take breaks. We are allowed to visit the toilet only twice during our shift and are punished if we exceed the time limit set for us,” said Lokeshwari, a member of the executive committee of the SJS Enterprises union. She was among 35 women suspended for protesting against management.

Female factory workers are also expected to lift heavy weights during menstruation.

Four women suffered strokes due to increased exposure to low temperatures, which resulted in the development of clots in their arteries. In response to BSE investigations, the company cited the boycott of food by 174 workers as the reason for the temporary suspensions, saying it was necessary to ensure that workers were physically fit to perform their duties safely, according to a statement submitted to the BSE.
