Q&A: Meet the Candidates for the 10th U.S. House of Representatives District

Three candidates are running in the November 5 House of Representatives 10th District elections.

Democrat Theresa Boisseau and Independent Jeff Miller are challenging incumbent Republican Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Austin), who first won the seat in 2005.

Candidates were asked to limit their answers to 50 words and were asked to answer the question and not to attack other candidates. Answers may have been shortened or edited to meet these guidelines, or for style and clarity.

Why are you running for this position?

As a single mother, I fought every day for my own child. As a teacher, I fought every day for every child who entered my classroom. Now, I am taking the fight to Washington to create a better future for every child in Texas and beyond.

What would be your top priorities if you were elected?

Adequate and accessible health care from children to the elderly, including reproductive freedom. Affordable housing, employment and solutions for the consequences of extreme weather. First and foremost, we must ensure that everyone has the right to vote. We cannot have a stable democracy as long as politicians choose for us.

What are the biggest challenges for residents in your neighborhood and how are you going to tackle them?

Accessible and affordable health care, reproductive freedom, and affordable living. See answer (#4) on health care. I would focus on restoring Roe (v. Wade) along with establishing access to birth control and (in vitro fertilization). I would pass legislation that ensures big corporations don’t charge exorbitant prices that harm their customers for a profit margin.

What are some ways you can ensure your constituents have access to the health care they need?

We need fair and accessible health care for everyone, at all stages of human existence. In Congress, I would introduce legislation to eliminate middlemen like pharmacy benefit managers, cap prescription drug prices, revolutionize the way America delivers health care to its citizens, and limit corporate control over medical facilities and hospitals.

What are your priorities regarding the country’s immigration policy?

We must learn from the past and plan for the future for humane solutions that modernize, not militarize, the border. We must use eVerify nationwide to secure needed workers across all sectors, finalize pathways to citizenship for Dreamers, establish clear processes for asylum seekers, and address the root causes of migration.

How do you build working relationships across district and party lines?

Skills I have learned as a teacher and in the family business, including the art of negotiation, striving to make transactions win-win while working with a broad spectrum of students and clients from different socioeconomic backgrounds and cultures, will prove invaluable. I will continue on this path, moving forward in Congress.

Why are you running for this position?

I’m running to protect America from national security threats, to fix this broken economy, to secure our borders, and to stand up to Communist China.

What would be your top priority if you were elected?

How do you build working relationships across district and party lines?

Throughout my career, I have been consistently named one of the most effective members of Congress. The issues that directly impact voters in this district are not “Republican issues” or “Democratic issues.” They are American issues, and we must work together to solve them as Americans.

Why are you running for this position?

Bill Kelsey, our original Libertarian candidate, was disqualified because he failed to pay the unconstitutional fee for funding Democrats and Republicans. I am running as an alternate candidate and meet all the qualifications. If elected, I will fight to expand the freedoms of citizens in this district, challenge the status quo, and promote libertarian values.

What would be your top priorities if you were elected?

As Barry Goldwater once said, “My goal is not to pass laws, but to repeal them.” There are too many laws, too many regulations, too many taxes. My highest priority would be to reduce the burden of government on all people and allow them to live as they choose.

What are the biggest challenges for residents in your neighborhood and how are you going to tackle them?

In short, the rising cost of everything due to the fiscal irresponsibility of our legislators. I would address this directly by working to stop the spending and rampant money printing that has inflated and devalued our currency and jeopardized our economic solvency.

What are some ways you can ensure your constituents have access to the health care they need?

Step one is to remove as many government barriers to health care as possible. Eliminate laws and regulations that keep costs high and seek market-based solutions that promote competition, price transparency, and voluntary cooperation among providers, insurers, and patients.

What are your priorities regarding the country’s immigration policy?

Prioritize speeding up the process for legal immigrants to work, start businesses, and contribute to our free market. Additionally, end drug laws that create black markets, fuel dangerous border crossings controlled by drug cartels, and promote safe and orderly immigration instead.

How do you build working relationships across district and party lines?

Because I am neither a Republican nor a Democrat, I would have a great opportunity to build relationships with members of the other parties who are committed to common goals, such as cutting government spending and reforming criminal justice, so they would not automatically see me as “the enemy” in today’s polarized environment.
