Job description

Mission Technologies, a division of HII, is seeking a highly motivated Software Test Engineer to join our growing team at our Hanover, Maryland location.

This feature will support a mission management tool called the Minotaur Mission Processor. Minotaur processes data from various sensors on manned and unmanned surveillance aircraft to enhance an operator’s ability to identify signatures from various onboard sensors, both at sea and on land, used across all branches of the military. Responsibilities include testing prototype solutions to unaddressed, critical military operational shortcomings through research, conceptualization, design, implementation, and evaluation as a member of an established team that has fielded numerous highly regarded capabilities. Topics vary widely over time, but current projects focus on improving the exploitation of airborne sensor data through object tracking, multi-sensor correlation, and operational data display.

Essential duties of a job

Develops, modifies, applies, and maintains standards for software system quality practices, processes, and procedures. Performs evaluations of software system activities, including requirements, design, development, documentation, integration, testing, verification, and validation. Defines appropriate controls to ensure product quality. Develops general operational criteria to ensure implementation of the software quality program according to project, process, and contract requirements and objectives. Ensures that projects and process control documentation meet requirements, objectives, and/or contracts. Reviews software system design, modifies specifications and plans against contractual and/or process requirements. Reviews applicable specifications, materials, tools, techniques, and methodologies. Provides or directs verification and validation of software system requirements, traceability, and testability.

The responsibilities of this position may include:

  • Develop and implement test procedures for both HII’s Minotaur product and third-party vendors.
  • Check software requirements and prepare test scenarios.
  • Participate in design reviews and provide input on requirements, product design, and potential issues.
  • Test creation, development, execution and closure.
  • Analyze test results for database impact, errors or bugs, and usability.
  • Perform moderately complex analysis and troubleshooting.
  • Design of both manual and automated test procedures.
  • Prepare reports on all aspects related to the software testing performed and report them to the design team.
  • Support system integration events on various aircraft during ground/flight testing.
  • Potential to fly on aircraft to support systems integration, testing and operator training
  • Willing to travel 10-20% of the time.
  • Application of the principles, practices, and procedures used in test engineering.

Minimum qualifications

  • 2 years of relevant experience with a Bachelor’s degree in a related field; 0 years of experience with a Master’s degree in a related field; or a High School diploma or equivalent and 6 years of relevant experience.
  • 1-2 years of experience in software testing/development in a Linux command line environment
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work together in a close-knit team environment
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Secret security clearance

Desired requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in software engineering, computer engineering, electrical engineering, or a related discipline
  • 0 – 2 years of experience in:
    • leading test and test automation teams
    • network communication protocols (IP, TCP, UDP, etc.)
    • scripting in Python, Bash, CSH, etc.
    • Agile software development methodology
  • Active Secret Security Clearance at US Level
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully apply educational background to real-world engineering problems

Physical requirements

Sufficient visual acuity and manual dexterity to meet the demands of the Software Engineer family.
