WINNIPEG – NEWS – In August 2024, the Winnipeg Police Service’s Guns & Gangs Unit launched an investigation into a criminal network suspected of smuggling cocaine into Winnipeg and northern First Nations communities.

On September 19, the investigation led to a traffic stop at St. Mary’s Road and Hull Avenue, which resulted in the arrest of three men. The following items were seized during the operation:

  • 834 grams of individually wrapped cocaine
  • 66 grams of extra cocaine
  • $1,965 in Canadian currency
  • Two vehicles
  • Packaging and transport materials for medicines
  • Stolen identification
  • Flight tickets and luggage

The arrested persons are:

  • Ahmed Abdi Bashir26, from Winnipeg
  • Bego Mahmutovic24, from Vita, Manitoba
  • Reid David Asals27, of Penticton, British Columbia

The cocaine had an estimated street value of $70,000, with the drugs believed to be destined for northern First Nations communities. Investigators suggest the trafficking network operates interprovincially, with plans to transport the drugs by plane.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Guns & Gangs Unit at 204-986-8430, or anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS or winnipegcrimestoppers.org.
