Zimbabwe: One-woman play tackles sexual exploitation

THEATRE lovers in Harare were in for a rare treat last week after Peter Churu’s one-woman play titled “Molly Street” was a success.

The performance, held from September 18 to 22 at the Theatre in the Park, was an eye-opener that tackled social issues such as sexual exploitation, domestic violence and poverty.

Actress Chido Joan Tenga played the role of Molly in this play, written and directed by Churu. The film depicts crimes of passion and domestic violence.

Patrick Tembo provided the soundtrack.

Set in the late 1950s on Chiredzi’s sugarcane plantation, Churu’s play explores factors that drive some women to enter prostitution.

Although sex workers are known for breaking up marriages, being violent and robbing clients, most of them have joined the world’s oldest profession out of habit.

In the case of “Molly Street,” Tenga touched the hearts of many by playing multiple roles in one role.

She became a victim of domestic violence and decided to enter prostitution. The play is a must-see for adults.

In this case, Molly turned to sex work to cope with domestic violence.

After Molly loses her baby, her world falls apart and she has no choice but to turn to the sex industry.

Besides her beauty, Molly was also murdered by her lover in a crime of passion.

These are some of the problems that sex workers face.

In the play, Molly’s vengeful spirit is also popular in Chiredzi.

Molly’s story is well known in the Lowveld, where she operated.

There is also a street named after her, but residents’ opinions are divided.

In her honor, the local municipality named a street after her.

In Chiredzi, Molly was a committed sex worker who was a household name in the late 1950s.

Besides the fact that she promoted a vice, many people in Chiredzi sympathize with her.

Similar cases of popular figures like Molly are well known in most communities.

In Highfield, Harare, a similar case of Peggy, the sex worker, was popular in the suburb.

Churu came up with the idea after learning more about the Chiredzi case involving Molly.
