Mumbai: The officer who fired the last shot at Badlapur sexual abuse case accused is part of a team of encounter specialists. The officer, Sanjay Shindeis a familiar name to the police. The suspect, Akshay Shinde, was arrested for allegedly sexually abusing two nannies at a school in BadlapurThe incident led to massive protests and outrage from parents and residents.

On Monday, the suspect was shot dead when he was taken away as part of the investigation into his ex-wife’s complaint. According to police, he grabbed an officer’s gun and fired shots, after which police shot him in self-defense.

Who is Sanjay Shinde?

Sanjay Shinde was part of the team led by the famous ‘meeting specialist’ Pradeep Sharmawho also appeared in the Netflix documentary ‘Mumbai Mafia: Police vs Underworld’. Sanjay Shinde, who previously worked with the Mumbai Police, is now part of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) set up by the state government to probe the Badlapur rape case.

Sanjay Shinde also acted in the 2014 Marathi crime thriller Reggae. In this film, the role of Pradeep Sharma was played by veteran actor Mahesh Manjrekar. Author and journalist S Hussain Zaidi’s ‘The Class of 83’ is also based on the encounters between Pradeep Sharma and other cops.

Cases against Sanjay Shinde

Sanjay Shinde is being investigated in the 2012 escape case of Vijay Palande, an accused in two murder cases who ran away from police custody. It was reported that Sanjay’s uniform was found in the SUV in which Palande allegedly fled.

According to reports, another investigation was launched against Sanjay after he exchanged gunfire with another police officer after drinking at a bar. In 2000, he was targeted in a kidnapping case, which was solved in 2012 by a senior officer after Shinde’s interrogation.

According to sources, Sanjay Shinde was part of the team led by Pradeep Sharma when he was heading the anti-extortion cell of the Thane crime branch. The team arrested underworld don Dawood Ibrahim’s brother Iqbal Kaskar from Thane in 2017 in an extortion case.
