Zelenskyy warns Putin against attacks on Ukrainian nuclear power plants

The Ukrainian president told the United Nations General Assembly that his intelligence services had discovered the deadly intentions of his Russian counterpart.

He said the revelation was further evidence that the international community must keep up pressure on Putin to end the war.

Zelenskyy said: “Recently I received another alarming report from our intelligence service. Now Putin seems to be planning attacks on our nuclear power plants and their infrastructure, with the aim of disconnecting the plants from the electricity grid.

“With the help of satellites from other countries, Russia receives images and detailed information about the infrastructure of our nuclear power plants.

“But what does this really threaten? Every missile or drone attack, every critical incident in the energy system, could lead to a nuclear disaster. Such a day must never come.

“Moscow must understand this, and this partly depends on your determination to put pressure on the aggressor. These are nuclear power plants. They must be safe.”

He added: “If Russia, God forbid, causes a nuclear disaster in one of our nuclear power plants, the radiation will not respect state borders and, unfortunately, several countries could feel the devastating effects.”
