Future Music magazine closes after 32 years: “Sadly, things change…”

Future musicthe British magazine focused on music production has released its very latest issue.

The publication, which is owned by Future PLC and supplies material to Future’s online platform MusicRadar.com, was one of the longest-running music technology magazines on the market.

It was launched almost 32 years ago, in the fall of 1992, and has been publishing a monthly magazine ever since. Future music is also responsible for a number of iconic music technology YouTube videos, including Avicii’s viral analysis of Dancing in my head and that of Martin Garrix Animals.

Future music magazine was accompanied each month by a selection of samples and free software, which it says have become “true classics”. Each issue also reviewed a selection of new synths, plugins and studio gear, and offered tips and advice for musicians of all levels. MusicTech counts artists such as Chromeo, Danny Byrd, Gary Barlow and Swedish House Mafia as regulars Music of the future.

The publication announced its closure in a Facebook post, which read:

Future music Issue 414 is now on sale, which we must admit with a heavy heart is the final issue of the magazine… For our latest issue, we wanted to give you a selection of tried and tested mixing advice to help you nail that final mix. To achieve that goal, we’ve compiled some of the most timeless and essential advice from our team of experts.

“Unfortunately, things are changing and the concept of a print publication focusing on something as cutting-edge as music technology has become an increasingly difficult proposition in recent years.”

Although the printed magazine is no longer published, the writers and reviewers of Future music will continue to work on MusicRadar. MusicRadar’s online platform is home to a wealth of music-focused publications from Future PLC, including Computer music, Electronic musician, Guitar world, Complete guitar, Guitarist, Guitarist, and more.

A source has also told MusicTech that Future will close Computer Music And Guitarist magazines.

In 2022, Future Music’s YouTube channel rebranded as MusicRadar Tech and continued to publish similar content.

FM’s statement concludes: “If you are an FM subscriber, don’t worry: our subscription team will be in touch with you directly to confirm that you will be refunded the remaining amount of your subscription period within 7-10 days of this final issue.
