TSLS Does Not Confirm Drug Allegations Against Students – FBC News

The Tertiary Scholarships and Loans Service has clarified that no student sponsored through its programme has been criminally charged for drug possession or involvement with cartels.

Following a media report about drug dealers targeting students of the Tertiary Education Loan Scheme, Chief Executive Dr Hasmukh Lal said consultations with the Fiji Police Force revealed that the problem affects both sponsored and private students at major institutions.

While there are reports of drug dealers approaching students around the time the grants are paid out, TSLS stresses that all information regarding the payment is shared transparently via social media.

He adds that no student has reported being pressured by vendors after payment.

TSLS reminds students that participation in criminal activity or behavior that brings the scholarship into disrepute may result in termination of their sponsorship.

Dr. Lal adds that she currently sponsors over 15,600 students, with stipends provided through secure payment methods for living expenses and tuition fees.
