NiDCOM rescues another eight Nigerian girls trafficked to Ghana

Another eight young girls trafficked to Ghana have been rescued and returned to Nigeria.

This is in addition to the 105 girls previously rescued from Ghana.

Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, while receiving the girls in Lagos, thanked the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for facilitating their return.

Gabriel Odu, a spokesperson for the agency, said in a statement on Thursday that the rescued girls have been handed over to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) to ensure that the girls have safe and comfortable accommodation pending their formal stay . rehabilitation and reintegration with their families.

The rescued girls, aged between 15 and 22, are from various states in Nigeria including Ebonyi, Akwa-Ibom, Imo, Plateau and Cross River.

The statement said they were lured to Ghana under false promises of work but forced into sexual exploitation.

Abike Dabiri-Erewa noted that there were many more trafficking victims waiting for rescue and thanked Ghanaian security services for their cooperation.

She acknowledged the important role of Chief Callistus Elozieuwa, President, Nigerians in Diaspora Organization (NIDO) Ghana Chapter, Nigerian Embassy in Ghana and Interpol Units of Nigeria and Ghana.

According to the NiDCOM boss, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda is committed to combating human trafficking and protecting the rights of Nigerian citizens, both at home and in the diaspora.

Meanwhile, the statement said that a 28-year-old Nigerian, Mrs. Favor Ugwu, one of the traffickers, was arrested by a court in Ghana and sentenced to eight years in prison for human trafficking.
