Gender Based Violence: The Benue government is trying to curb cases in the state

The Benue State Government has commenced training on the prevention of Gender Based Violence (GBV) for critical stakeholders including security operatives to counter the high number of cases recorded in the state.

The training on gender-based violence, sexual exploitation/abuse and human trafficking was organized for law enforcement officers.

The training was organized by the Benue State Government through the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, in collaboration with the State Internal Security Agency.

The Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, Mr Aondowase Kunde, represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr Alexander Tsarga, said it was also intended to take a closer look at the victims of GBV and provide them with adequate protection and justice .

Mrs. Mediatrice Barengayabo, Benue Sub-Office Head, said the training was on critical law enforcement responses during floods, with a specific focus on GBV, Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (SEA) and Human Trafficking (TIP).


“During crises such as floods, vulnerabilities are heightened and the risks of gender-based violence (GBV) increase. Today’s session will equip you with the knowledge and tools needed to respond effectively and ensure the safety, dignity and rights of all individuals, especially the most vulnerable. Let us work together to ensure that protection and justice remain our priority in times of crisis.

“As an organization, we are committed to increasing the capacity of our partners and supporting you in every way possible to ensure the highest standards of response and protection. We also want to ensure that information and culture, SEA and TIP increase significantly. Your role as law enforcement officers is critical in preventing, identifying and addressing these problems,” she said.

Dr. Abubarkar Auwal Usman of the United Nations Children’s Fund spoke about the importance of the training and the need to protect women and children from abuse.

On his part, Dr. Abudul Muhammad, State Coordinator of the World Health Organization, WHO, urged participants to help victims of sexual abuse.
